CertifiedMedical Coding Specialist

Review the medical record to assurespecificity of diagnoses, procedures and appropriate/optimal reimbursement forhospital and/or professional charges. Abstract information from medical recordsfollowing established methods and procedures.  Review medical recorddocumentation and accurately code the primary/secondary diagnoses andprocedures using ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 coding conventions.  Sequence thediagnoses and procedures using coding guidelines. Ensure APR-DRG/EAPGassignment is accurate.  Abstract and compile data from medical recordsfor appropriate optimal reimbursement for hospital and/or professional charges.Issue monthly coding review bulletins to appropriate parties. Provides generalguidance and education to review staff regarding coding issues and serve ascoding resource for staff. The Coder will assist in identifying issues that maylead to incorrect coding such as outliers, readmissions, human error andhospitals with patterns of erroneous billing. He/she will closely coordinateservices with Clinical Reviewers in conducting retrospective reviewactivities. 

  • Associate or Bachelor’s Degree inHealth Information or Health Informatics (or related field) required andcertification as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) orRegistered Health Information Technician (RHIT) required.
  • 1 year experience interpretinginformation contained in medical records for application of appropriate codingrules.  
  • Excellent verbal/writtencommunication and presentation skills essential. 
  • Strong critical thinking skillsnecessary. 
  • Ability to work in a teamenvironment. 
  • Flexibility and good organizationalskills needed. 
  • Proficiency in PC and MicrosoftOffice required; knowledge of electronic medical records required.
