JOB TITLE:            MedicalRecords - Data Abstractor



FLSA STATUS:     Non-exempt

Summary Description

Data Abstraction, select specific data or information andenter the data into database in accordance with contractual and organizationalcriteria for ORYX and Hospital Compare Measures.


  • Read and review individual medical records toidentify required information, including demographics, disease-specific topics,and medications. Oryx measure abstractions and hospital compare measures.
  • Read and comprehend clinical information to makeinformed abstraction decisions.
  • Accurately enter data into database asspecified.
  • Determine and negotiate the validity of theabstracted data and question controversial information prior to data entry.
  • Consistently meet or exceed productivity andaccuracy standards established by the customer and/or the company.
  • Identify areas for improvement in the process,i.e. training, module-related issues and use of software.
  • Solve problems with regard to unique record orprocess issues.
  • Interact regularly and appropriately with peersand members of management.

  • High school diploma or equivalent and a minimumof two years specialized experience. This may be a combination of education and work experience.

Skills, Knowledge andAbilities

  • Familiarity with standard keyboard and databasesoftware desirable.
  • Ability to maintain a high level ofconfidentiality and integrity.
  • Ability to adapt to frequent changes in theabstraction process.
  • Ability to work independently and maintain anelevated level of concentration.
  • Capable of consistency, speed, and accuracy oftask
  • Interpersonal skills, including the ability tocommunicate and negotiate with other employees.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpretphysician documentation.


  • Two years medical experience, clinical andhospital experience preferred.
  • Highly developed background in medicalterminology, anatomy & physiology, and disease processes desirable.

The employee regularly (up to 10 times perday) lifts, carries or otherwise moves records up to 20 pounds from the storageshelves to the desk. The employee regularly communicates with others bytalking, hearing, or other means.  Theemployee constantly and intensely uses close vision to read and interpret fulltext at 20 inches or less, both on paper and on a computer monitor. Moderatenoise is typical for the work environment.
